Jim came back this morning and brought Keith along. We left to get the tide and it paid off pretty well. The guys were throwing flies and the bass were scattered but hungry. We ended the trip with a double and called it a day.

Thursday morning brought Peter back with his sil Tom for his first trip in the salt. We left early in the fog to catch the remaining tide. It was running pretty good when we arrived and soon we found what we had come for. We had a pretty good pick till the tide petered out. The bass were all in the 12 to 20 pound range.Their smiles said it all.

This past week brought our granddaughter up from South Carolina to do some fishing. She wanted bottom fish so off we went. Lots of small stuff around but she landed a seven pound fluke that was 25 inches long. She finished the week with a four foot sandshark. We went through 15 pounds of squid but had a blast. Back to stripers this week.
This morning Dr Jeff brought his son in law Jason up for a Fathers Day trip on the briney. We left early to catch the ebb tide while it was still moving. We tried eight different spots on both tides and it was like fishing in a desert. There was absolutely no signs of life anywhere. We found the hole in the spring run. Dr. Jeff had fished with me for over 25 years and we’ve had some great days on the water. We did see a large pod of dolphins and that was our highlight for the day.

This morning Zach made the trip up north from New Jersey. We arrived at our first stop with 10 of our new friends. Shortly after we arrived we got our Good Luck phone call from Gail. Five minutes later we had the first fish of the day. We tried about every place that I could think of without any takers so we returned to our first stop. During the whole trip we saw four fish landed and Zach got three of them. All were taken on a fly. It a bad day considering.

Jim enjoyed last weeks trip so much that he came back again today. We left early but in time to meet up with 12 or so of our boating friends. The fish were scattered and extremely fussy. We managed two good ones and only saw two others caught. All in all not a bad day with light winds and blue sky.

Jim came down for our first trip of the year. It took two casts for the first eater. Perfect conditions for an afternoon on the briney. We had a steady pick for the day. Not a bad start.

I took a solo trip yesterday to do a little scouting. My first stop had a rip that was a bit more than I wanted to deal with so I made a move to one that was only three feet. Shortly my bucktail got slammed and after a longer fight than I wanted I was able to net a 37”- 20# striper. Picked another around 12 lbs and by then the tide slowed enough for me to go back to my first stop. I was able to get three more between eight and ten lbs. to eat a fly. A pretty good two hour trip to begin the season.

I will be getting the boat ready next week and it should be in the water soon. The small stripers have started to trickle into the bays and rivers. These are the 15 inch ones and they will be followed by the larger fish in the next couple weeks. The reports that I’ve seen are this year is a good one for squid of all sizes. That bodes well for a good start to our season. Stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted.
It looks to be a cold start to 2025. I can’t believe that this is going to be my 28th season as a Guide on the briney. It’s still fun so I’m going to keep doing it. The good news is that Charter prices will stay the same as the past few years. The fishing outlook is pretty good. The majority of the bass should be in the 10 to 12 lb. Range with some bigger ones in the mix. No telling about bluefish but going by last year we should see some good fishing for bonito. If the albies come inshore this year it will be the icing on the cake.
