I put the boat in yesterday at 10:30AM and was fishing by 11:00. I wanted to check out an inshore spot so I was using the old fish finder rig. Usually known as a spining rod with a white bucktail. In the first six casts I had one 10lb. bass and a 16 lb. one The tide was dying and the wind was changing so it was difficult to keep drifting over the same spot. The fish were bunched in a fairly small area away from any reference points. In the next hour of so I picked up four more fish from six to ten lbs. A couple on an eel fly. I’ll try again later this week.

I just returned from a five day visit with Mel and family in New Brunswick. The weather was warm and so was the fishing. Mark went up with me again and Gail is still recovering from spine surgery. She is doing great and should be in the boat by June. We caught 22 Atlantic Salmon, 62 Grilse and a bunch of Brook Trout to about three lbs. This year we fished two days in tee shirts and last year we had two white out days when we couldn’t see the river banks because of the snow. The photo is my Guide, Robert with a 40 inch plus Salmon that weighed about 20lbs. Now the vacation is over and its time to get the boat uncovered and in the water. The reports are that some Stripers are already starting to show.

We made it through January pretty well and now its time to get back to work. A lot of my anglers ask me what I do in the winter so here is a peek. This past Thursday I tied a fly. The first one since October. With that success I tied two on Friday and they both came out pretty good. After all that work I took the weekend off. Now its Tuesday and I’m already planning on a fly to tie this week. Actually most of my new supplies have arrived so it won’t be long.

I was watching a disturbing news report yesterday. One of the reporters mentioned that the price of gas is expected to rise to close to $5.00/gal. by summertime. Then add another $1.00 for Marine Gas. I was forced to raise my rates this year because of the fuel costs. If they keep going up there will be a lot fewer charter boats and anglers that can afford to fish.

On a brighter note its getting near spring salmon time in New Brunswick. Gail won’t make it this year because of her surgery but I might be able to take a short trip.

The calender has changed and its time to start thinking about what’s important. We started off this season with a trip to the Marlboro Fly Fishing Show. There weren’t a lot of people there. It might have had something to do with the Patriots and a playoff game. We had lots of time to visit with old friends. I picked up quite a bit of tying materials and a few new ideas for some bass and albie flies. Gail is having back surgery soon so we both will be housebound for a while. That will give me time to try some new stuff.

We pulled the boat yesterday. Its just too windy on most days to even try to get out. There are blues at Gardner’s Island and small bass at Montauk. Those are both long runs for a chance at fish. I had friends fish at Watch Hill this week. All morning for a small blue. Lots of bait with no fish chasing them. To recap the season. May and June were good for stripers. No real big ones but the ones that we caught were decent. July and August brought the blues in. If you rigged for them it was a lot of fun. The bonito didn’t show at all and we did go looking. Sept and October were good for albies. We did pretty well on this side and also had some good trips to Montauk. We hit the jackpot on Columbus Day with all the big bass and albies that you could want. Since then the bass have been replaced by smaller fish and the albies are packing their bags. Thanks to everyone that fished with us this year. It was a lot of fun. We are looking forward to a little rest and a new season. Check in every once in a while. I’ll put some stuff up when I get the chance. Probably fly pics. and fish pics. If you have any ideas let me know. Have a great winter.

Dr. Jeff brought his son Andre and his buddy Robbie out for a late afternoon trip Tuesday. Both are at the ripe old age of ten. We started out where I had seen some bluefish earlier in the day. The boys quickly kicked the skunk out of the boat. The fish soon disappeared and we went on a search. After the fourth stop we hit the jackpot. The guys were pretty busy for over an hour till we lost the tide and the sun. We had doubles and singles and more doubles. The boys had another boat with three young adults trolling circles around us until they gave up. I almost felt sorry for the other boat. NOT!! It was a pretty eventful trip. We got up close and personal with a 300 lb. sunfish. We saw a waterspout follow us with a rainbow and on the way home we watched the full moon rise from the clouds. It just doesn’t get any better than this.
