Extremes

Today brought Thomas and David all the way from Chicago to try for the sometimes elusive striped bass we left early and soon found ourselves in the middle of a fog bank. The visibility was about 50 yards and the radar screen showed a half dozen boats where I wanted to fish. We found our spot but the fish were not happy today. We moved around a bit and picked up some here and there. By 10:00 AM the fog burned off and with no wind we baked for two more hours. The guys picked up some more bass and a good sized bluefish. Still a fun day

Even an old guy can catch one

Gail and I headed out this morning at the crack of 8:00 AM. We were a little early for the tide that i wanted so we did a little prospecting. We found a swarm of bass and picked away on the outside of them using spin rods and Albie Snax . We got a few to play including one about 18 lbs. The tide started to run so we moved and switched to fly rods. Again the fish co operated and we each caught a few more. These guys were in the 12 to 14 lb. range. The bait is starting to pile in now and thats a good thing .

Foggy Sunday

Today Kieth brought his sons out for a shot at some stripers. You couldn’t see my boat from the parking lot so we knew it would be a challenge Shortly after we arrived at the secret spot Blake struck first with a healthy striper. Before we could land that one Parker hooked the fish of the day. we picked up a couple more for good measure and the tide changed and shut down the bite. All in all a pretty fun day on the briney.

Old School

Today Ralph brought out Mike for the annual father son fishing trip. Based on yesterdays trip I decided to skip the swarms and try a different are. We picked up a few fish fairly quickly and that continued for the next few stops. Today the guys caught several fish that were in the slot limits. A pretty fun day on the water.

Dr. Jim strikes again

We had our first charter of the season today and it was none other than the infamous Dr. Jim . Jim has been fishing with me for over 20 years now and its always a good time . we started early and found the bass bunched up in the usual places. They are currently feeding on krill which are about 1/4 inch long. We managed a handful of schoolies before we called it a day. Jim had to work a lot harder than he should have but we caught some fish and solved some of the world’s problems.

Scouting

I took a solo trip this morning to see what was new. I found some bass right away and caught a bunch on a fly. After a bit I switched to spinning gear and that was a little more of a challange. After a bit i figured what they would eat and how to fish it. i switched back and fished both.

I fished till i was tired and that was just enough..

Here and there

I took a last minute solo trip Tuesday morning to see what is going on. I found some bass right off the bat where they should be. Had some fun and moved on. pulled a bass from the rocks with a spook. Tried another spot where the fish were on sand eels. I wanted to see if the fish were around and they are. Sometimes they are with some good sized bluefish.

I hate to do this

When i posted my rates for 2022 gas was $3.65 a gallon. This week its $5.96. Burning an average of 15 gal. a trip I can’t afford not to raise my prices. If for some reason fuel prices drop my rates will follow. We are expecting to be paying close to $7.00 by the end of summer.

Back at it

after a short vacation and household responsibilities we were able to get back to business. We arrived at the very end of the flood tide and it took four casts to put one in the boat on a fly. Gail soon followed suit. We tried two spots and caught fish in both. This should be a pretty good season.

We are back

After a long winter we are back in the water better than ever. We have a new engine block, powerhead and pretty much everything under the cowling. we launched this morning and took a little check ride to make sure everything works as it should it did so we stopped to see if any fish wanted to come out and play it took Gail about ten minutes to put the first one in the boat. Those of you that know her wont be surprised. i followed suite a few minutes later. We had some fish on top and managed a handful up to about ten lbs. A pretty good start after a long winter. This years fish are like the rest of us and they put on a few pounds too.
